Hi girls!!
i would love to give a try on my first but am so unsure. Any suggestions as to how to go about this? I see the layouts [sketches?] and they are all so beautiful, but being SO new I am not sure........
I downloaded the zip file but am looking at it and saying to myself, "okay, what now". Is there a rule to this or any way one wants as long as it's FROM the sketch?

Ricki, were you able to unzip the file? If not, right click on the Zip file, then there should be an option to Extract from zip, or something to that effect. Once you have unzipped the file, open the sketch (.psd file) in Photoshop. Duplicate it; do not work on the orginal.
I'm wondering if there is a tutorial, yet, on how to work with templates/sketches. That would be most helpful.
Anyway, once you get the sketch into Photoshop, ask for more help if you need it!
Ricki
08-03-2010, 08:25 PM
I didn't mention that I unzipped it. I meant to say I am looking at the jpg and was wondering how to go about it.
I didn't even realize that there is one jpg and one psd format!! Good thing I asked. Now it sounds easier and I'm off to choose with what to work with.
For sure to duplicate will prevent unwanted accidents in case I go wrong.....:)
Thanks for the help!!

And this is going to take me a while. I have to figure out how to put what where and so forth but I believe I got the general idea!!!
...as I was writing this, I was able to figure out how. I needed to drag from the duplicate to the paper or background I chose.
My thinking cap is on for sure:)

Okay gals, here goes. I KNOW it needs a whole lot of fixing up so please tell me what am I doing wrong?!?!?!?!
This is my FIRST layout ever, never did this kind of thing, and I know I have tons of mistakes so I would really appreciate guidance in how to perfect it up.
This is my first grandson and I KNOW it's not at all like the sketch but I had to stop trying at some point. Looking at all the awesome layouts I feel silly.........

Ricki,
You did it! Yea, I am so excited. Great color choices and it does look like a very artistic take on the sketch challenge. I love the frames you used and what an adorable little face! This is really good. I am so thrilled you felt comfortable to post your very first layout here at the Den. You will see, everyone will be so delighted with your layout. You did such a wonderful job with it! Very nice! (Love the distressed edged look).

Hi Laura,
Thank you so much for the compliments! I wasn't satisfied but I guess there is a first for everything. I have SO much to learn and I hope with time I will get the hang of it. It has nothing to do with the sketch and that is what bothered me but I'm here to stay and I WILL learn.
But yes, I felt comfortable enough to post it and that means that I feel confident here in the Den.
I felt AWFUL about the credits and as soon as it dawned on me I fixed that.
Karen
08-07-2010, 05:54 AM
Ricki I love the colours you have used. The bold coloured border with lighter paper and darker frames is very good.
Don't worry that you have not used the sketch exactly as it was - the rules are, there are no rules [lol]. In other words it is okay to adapt the sketch to whatever you want.

Ricki, I would never have known this was your first layout if you hadn't told us! You did a great job!
First off, your grandson is adorable! I like the colors you've used and the shape of the frames. The shadow behind the lighter colored mat makes it pop off the page. Your ribbons/brackets tie the page together.
I couldn't find this in the gallery, why don't you post it there so more will see it? I'm sure there are many members who might not look at this thread.
I look forward to seeing more of your pages!

Ricki - we are our own worst critics. The thing to remember is there is no right or wrong when creating your pages. And sometimes it's better to step away from the LO and go back to it in a few days. Your opinion of the LO may change after you get away from it.
I like what you have done and I see many many innovative and beautiful things you've done with it.
Want to see one of my first pages? Although it's "not much" I still enjoy looking at it because it was "where I was" at that point in time.

I think I used a brush for the backgrounds and I used that layer style on the text. The "tear strip" on the left edge was my first attempt and boy was that a disaster. I never did learn how to make them better. LOL That photo is that weird shape because I was cutting away things I did not want in the photo and that was the only way I knew to improve the photo.

You are ever so right, we ARE our own worst critics!!!! I did step away a number of times but always came back to the same thing and decided to go for it in the end with what ever came out :)
Thank you for showing your first LO. I'm sure I will also go back and look where I began and I'm sure there will be difference!!!!
And thank you so much for your kind words. They help my confidence build up.

I REMEMBER that layout, Janice! Oh what fun times learning, isn't it? I wanted to go back and redo some of my earlier layouts for my albums but my husband said, why don't you keep them, they are great memories, not only of the events you scrapped but how you have changed and grown in your scrapbook learning. And now I sometimes look back at those layouts and have a good chuckle, but I wouldn't change them for the world! So happy scrapping everyone!

I am so sorry my dear Karen!!!! I TOTALLY forgot to add due credits!!!!!!!!! I used the kit "Love Is All We Need" from Karen at Snickerdoodle's kit. Wow, that was the first time that ever happened to me, I NEVER forget to do that.
Ricki,
I don't think you have done a whole lot wrong with this at all! Your little grandson is a cute as can be. I like the idea of having him in these nicely bevelled frames grouped together. They look good on the lighter coloured paper with the darker paper (matching the frames) in the background as a border.
I think it's a fabulous first attempt and I'm so very thrilled that you didn't allow nerves or apprehension to prevent you from posting. We all started out at the same point and we travel our journeys at different rates. So we are all at different levels and we are ALL STILL learning.
I must see if I can did my first attempt up from the depths of my hard drive if I still have it. I had NO idea what I was doing. I didn't even know what scrapbooking was...........I'd never heard of it, as I don't think it was (and probably still isn't!) all that popular in my country.

Ricki, your first layout is wonderful!!!! (are you SURE it's your first - LOL!!). I just love how you did the background layers and the "grunge" look to them. And your little grandson is so cute in the coordinating color frames - great job!

Since we are showing "first" layouts, I actually found mine, so I thought I'd share. Very plain, no special effects!! (the coffee in the froth looked--to me--like a heart with cupid's arrow through it!!). Here it is:

Hi Robyn!!!
My oh my!!! What kind words!!! First of all yes, my first is so sweet, could eat him up without sugar. :)
I am so happy to read that my first LO attempt is nice, can't wait for the next one! I can see we all started from somewhere and I feel good knowing I didn't make a fool of myself, you have no idea how nervous I was but on the other hand I felt confident enough to post it without fear, just plain jumped in.....taking the chance and boy am I glad I did.
Thank you SO much:D

I see everyone's "first" and I am thinking to myself, we all started from scratch :D
I didn't even THINK of that when I posted it.
Thank you to all of you for making me feel good about myself. It helps me feel so much better with my first attempt.

Lol oh Ricki, I love you.. Have really enjoyed looking at all these first layouts..
And yours is fantastic for your first attempt, and I to am so so glad that you finished it and allowed us to share it with you.. Thank yousmilie-love029
I cant wait to see more now;)..
I guess since everyone else has put up their firsts, I shall see if I can track one of mine down, with computer dying, unless I transferred them to a disc I have lost them.. Sounds good to me :rofl2:
I never put up a layout till I thought I was at least fairly good, sometimes when we see layouts in the gallery from those way more experienced we feel intimidated.. I know I did.. So I am really happy that you were not, we need more ladies like you
But this is my effort for this template.. I did swap bubbles for the rectangle and square photos, but I kept to the size and placement lol..
And I always make a template my own anyway..

Karen is referring to a post I just removed. I did so because I thought my choice of wording may have been a bit offensive. But basically I was saying that I was proud of the fact that our members are supportive and encouraging of one another (this can be a little different at some sites) and I'm so pleased with the feel and atmosphere that you all have created here in such a short time! Thank you everyone.

What kind words!!! Thank you SO much!!!!! I can tell you for sure it took a lot of courage on my part to post it but everyone here is giving me such a good feeling that I felt safe enough. And I was right!!! I have been around but not in forums of these kinds but from what I did see I have never encountered such goodness and kindness. This gave me the push to do it and I am ever so happy I did!!!!!

More photos from the Ohio-Erie Canal Towpath. A great blue heron this time. We are so fortunate to live so close to this trail. It is a great place for riding bikes too.

Aqwa is a place where you get to look at the animals living in the sea and they also had a touch and feel pool which the kids loved some much that I had to buy new t-shirt due to the ones they were wearing got absolutely drenched:)
