View Full Version : Facebook - I just don't get it!! Can you explain it to me?

Can somebody please explain Facebook to me? I'm feeling really stupid, but I just don't 'get' it!
I have a personal FB and a Red Dog FB. I never go there, but I did today and I had 33 'requests' for some farm thingy??.........and there seems to be other stupid type 'games'. What on earth is all that about!
Then I skip on over to my so called 'home' page and there are conversations going on between other people that have nothing to do with ME. Once people are 'friends' do you get all their posts/conversations on your home page?
I know you will read this and think..........'silly old git, she's lost the plot'..........well you would be right, I HAVE!! :D
..............and Twitter! Well let's not even go there or I might twitter myself into a complete 'senior's collapse' and lose it completely! :rofl2:

Robyn just know you are not alone. I think the same of facebook and don't go near twitter.
I am very dissappointed in what I thought face book was..
I don't play the games and that is mostly what seems to come across. I too only go there rarley..

Perhaps we can start up a 'silly old gits' FB page! :rofl2:

I with you Robyn about twitter - never been there and don't want to be. I paddle around the edges of Facebook but that's all. Traci will probably be able to answer your questions, particularly about the security side of things.

I don't get Facebook either. I check it daily because all the family is on it, but the young people (and in this case I'm talking about 30 and 40 -somethings :rofl2: ) use it on their phones and post right from their phones.
I don't know if the extended "friends" of my family members can see my posts?? I don't answer requests to be "my friend" from anyone other family members because I don't want everyone in the world to see my "family" stuff, but I don't know if my stuff is going out over the entire world. (not that I post anything even remotely interesting ;) )
So, I'm in the boat with you guys - I don't get it.

YEA!!!!! I'm not the only one!
Megan is so tired of tutoring me in FB,
I still am never sure whether something I post is private or out loud, so I usually wait until I get an email notification, and then reply. :o
I do not understand why some of the original comments are there to begin with, such as: It's bee a day, or...need to go to Wal-mart... [I"m thinking, so? Tell me something if you want to tell me, not leave a dangling]
I did ask for private lessons on it at DST, and a designer helped me to be a follower of her. All I had to do was click the "like" button at the top.
I do NOT do any of those game thingys...like farmville. There are several different ones and I ignore them all.
I have managed to UL a couple LO's now.

I REALLY don't get it at all. :) I visit off and on to see what friends are up to, and look at their photo's. It must be wonderful to have time to play all those gamie things!! lol

Well, I try with mine! I have even posted from my cell just to see if I could do it!!! I do use it mostly for family stuff and I removethe Farmville stuff that my daughter plays. I do play Bejeweled Blitz but it doesn't report on my every game!!!
I post my LOs there sometimes hoping for ideas. The conversations on your Home page part Robyn, is where you check what your Friends have posted. Your profile part is where you post your info. If they have something interesting you can click on their name and go see what else they are up to.
I just try to stay up with the grandkids! They sometimes post things I don't understand tho!! :D I check digi scrap sites. Sometimes you get freebies that way! I think it is fun and I have to admit that I check mine a couple of times a day... only from the PC, I'm not adicted enough to do it on the cell phone. And, I don't OK any friend requests from anyone I do not know!!!
My kids think I am a Techie and I have to keep up that rep!!! Be my friend if you want... I do check the pages of those of you who are friends already!! So I'm watching you!!!! hehehe

Well, I LOVE FB!! I only check it every few days, but I do enjoy reconnecting with high school and college friends, and other friends. I NEVER confirm a friend with someone I don't know, and I NEVER play any of the games, and I NEVER accept anything else. I just stay in touch with friends. I DO make sure my privacy settings are the way I want them for a layer of security.
One friend who I had not seen in a number of years (lives in another state) saw my scrapbook pages on FB. She contacted me (via FB) and said she would be in town, and could she please come over so I could show her some scrapbooking basics. Which I did, of course!! Always looking to convert people!! Anyway, she is going to buy PSE, AND I gave her this site to join and purchase kits!! All this because of FB!

I use FB and sometimes I go on every day and then I forget for a while. However since I got my windows phone for work, I do check in when I'm on the train!
Like Lana, I don't play the games but it's fun to see what friends you don't often see are up to. I have people on there I've been on courses with for a week but haven't seen since and we still communicate. There is someone I used to work with who got married and went to Australia. I've seen pics of her and hubby and now their two children. I love that part of it.
However, I don't befriend anyone at work, although my boss is my friend because she had to practice using it to communicate with her son when he went on a trip to Georgia :rofl2:
It was through FB that Traci messaged me to let me know about DDD andI'm already friends with some some other members of the Den from a previous forum, so am happy to be friends with anyone who posts regularly here. If you use another name, please say who you are and that you are from DDD so I don't delete you as Spam!!!!

I signed up for FB thinking it would be a great way to be incontact with the kids..when we were on the road. But at times it just seems so over powering. It does have its pluses as we have made contact with missing family members and that is great!! Just seems like there is so much stuff that you have to wade through to get to what you are interested in.
Yes Robyn we do need out own little club...LOL

I find most of my friends are on FB almost 24/7. I am not that addicted, but I do check several times a week. I was annoyed by all the game stuff so when a request came across I 'banned' it. I don't seem to get many of those anymore. I also joined the fan page that says "I don't care about your farm, your fish or your mafia." That has seemed to deter so many of that stuff coming across as well.
I agree it is not what it originally was and can sometimes be annoying, but I mostly use to stay in touch with people I may not other talk to very often. I love being able to keep up on my brothers and sisters cause they are so much younger than I am it is not always easy for us to get together and hang out.
That's my two sense anyway.

Well, you can search for me ... Kay Taylor.... the one in Central Arkansas. I'm sure there are more! Just tell me you know me from the Den and you can be my Friend. :)
I just sent friend requests to Muriel and Janice but couldn't find you Lana.

I confess...I check my home page and my designer page at least 3 times a day. I still find it very confusing. They have taken something that used to be simple and made all these "wonderful" changes to it and now I can't find anything (or at least not without going to the help screen.) I stopped playing games and just ignore the darn requests if and when I get them. You can see posts made by any of your friends. Make sure you have your privacy settings set up the way you want or anybody and their brother can see your posts. What has this world come to? Social networking...I think I was better off without it:)

07-30-2010, 01:35 PM
first of all I have to say I didnt read all the posts here, but I'm with Lana and Janice:
do NOT play games (I think is mind numbing) and I am not addicted ...used to go check a lot more often, not so much now, but being so far away from family and lots of my friends ...is an ideal place to make sure evertyone sees the photos, the LOs, know what we are up to...my friends post videos of music I would have never come across, links to blogs, links to causes...I don't know... I think is a good thing if one isnt all day hanging around there...which applies to every site I know....

I love it! Band together and conquer!
Actually, I 've found the 'dummy' series of book rather difficult to maneuver. I like Kelby, he uses small words.
Besides banding together, we can get assistance from the young ones we know. That should do it.
Although, Megan says I frustrate her with my repetitive questions, I remind her... that I dealt hers for years...birth thru------> about age 20 (she is now 26).

If I write on my wall and/or put an image up...........if I make a mistake..........can I edit or delete that? I can't see where that is possible.

Yes, you can delete but not edit. To "remove" you hover your mouse at the top right of your post and the remove button will show up. If I want to edit something, I will usually copy it before removing and then paste it to the new post.

I'll admit that I check Fb many times during the day. I don't post much, but my nieces and nephews do and this is a way for me to see what they're up to. My niece also posts pics of her little girl who was born on 6/10/10; since I live over 300 miles away from them this is a way for me to "see" her often! I've also reconnected with some friends from high school and college on Fb. Our high school 30 year class reunion (which I didn't attend) was planned almost entirely on Fb.
I don't play any games on Fb and ignore all of the requests for games and things that require applications.
So while it has its downside, there are many pluses also. I have all of my privacy settings to friends only so only those who are my friends can see my posts and information.

I don't go on Facebook too much, as I am a little leery of the privacy issues, so I put as little personal information on as possible. I did get hooked into playing Farmville for a little while, but now my notification box is teeming with Farmville requests that just keep piling up.
I have tried to "like" various digiscrapping sites, but when I go to those sites I never see myself as one who 'likes' them in the list of names. But apparently I am there because, as a result, I do get updates in my messages box of links for freebies for becoming a fan. And figuring out how to get those update messages initally was a chore!
I also actually tried to post a preview kit, and in doing so, it automatically linked that designer's post to mine which said the same thing--I don't think I did that right! So I am done trying - I just go on to read the "feeds" of my family and friends as to what is going on with them, and I check out any pictures they post to keep up to date with what is going on, And once in a while I MAY comment - I do know how to do that - LOL!
And as long as it is someone I know, I will "friend" them, even tho I may not actively correspond with them - at least I know where to find them if I want to. The one good thing about it is that I recently reconnected with someone I hadn't seen in 30 years!
But, in conclusion, FB is something I could definitely do without. I did take a long time before I finally joined it! And there is no way I will get involved with Twitter (or myspace)!

ROTFL! Robyn, Your post is just too funny!
I am a little weary of Facebook as a lot of verbal abuse and silliness is going on there.
I have an account on Facebook but keep everything absolutely private. I have photos of my grandchildren that I do not want to be visible everywhere except in protected galleries and forums etc. (I have all my Album settings to friends only and have customized even that.)
You can hide comments you don't care to see, like the farmgame posts. If you look to the right of the post you may see where is says "HIDE". Click on that and they ought not to show up anymore. The comments are being posted by people you have befriended but you can hide the comments and they won't even know. You'll still be friends.
Be aware that if you become a fan of anyone or anything they will have free access to all your info. Also, If someone "tags" themselves in one of your pictures that picture will then be on their page and from there it can take wings and go everywhere. You are notified when someone tags a photo and I always remove the tags.

LOVE all these posts! Yes, I will admit that I have several FB pages...I have one that is in my *real* name. You can find me there. I have a business page...Priaire Woman Designs. I also have a couple of "dummy" pages for various reasons....mostly testing privacy settings and such. It's a geek thing.
The thing to remember about Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and ALL so called social networking sites is that "once posted, forever there". You may delete a photo or unfriend a friend, but the posts and photos are always out there....somewhere. So think about that when you post something. I have tried to drill that into my DGS' head....with little success. The kids will post anything and everything! But they aren't alone! We "big people" are guilty of it, too. PLEASE realize that there is NO privacy online!
There are privacy settings on Facebook. These are found under Account. Take the time to look them over carefully. There are several screens associated with the privacy settings, so be thorough. In general, if you want to keep your posts from going to everyone and their dog, set the privacy to allow only friends to be able to see what you post. That will cut down on most of the dreck that comes through. It may also interfere with some of the game functionality, but if you don't play the games, no worries!
If anyone is interested in a short rundown on the privacy settings, let me know and I'll type something up......

Okay, weighing in here myself. I use FB for business only. I have a page SnickerdoodleDesignsByKaren, and I post new products there, when I have a freebie available on my blog, when I am hosting a challenge and where it is, .. and to tell everyone when the Den went on FB. I RARELY will comment on anything other than LOs or sales or anything else non-scrapbook related. I NEVER play games on FB, just not interested and don't have the time.
I know that a lot of people use it as mentioned in these previous posts, to keep up with family, etc, and love it for that purpose, but I just haven't done that.
I DO know that FB can be a valuable business asset. I participated in a FB Train (like a blog train only on FB) and picked up 50+ "fans." I know that I see posts that other fans have made about store sales, and I've gone to the stores and spent $$. I also know that people have come to my store and made purchases because they saw a posting of mine on FB. I have given out coupons on FB and tracked the sales by the coupon - and that shows me, again, that it does work.
I know the basics of FB - how to get done what I need/want to get done. If anything goes wrong, I ask Mozz! She is the expert on it in my life, but now it looks like I have you too, Traci! Yippee for all of us!!!!

I had no idea about tags!
Kim, thank you for the 'delete' information. Wouldn't it just be easier to have the delete button showing; I had no idea it was there!
If you did accept somebody as a friend, and then realised you don't even know them, can you then 'undo' this acceptance? I'm not in this position, but am just wondering.

What's the difference between x amount of PEOPLE like this and x amount of FRIENDS like this? Are people in this context fans?
I believe that when it says PEOPLE those are not your friends. When it says friends, those are your friends. For instance, I see this on my page:
(Friend name) is now friends with ______ and 2 other people. This means that my friend is friends with people who are not my friends.

Hi ladies,
It was suggested I come throw in my cents worth..
First facebook, was designed for advertising.. And lets face it, the guy who owns it is laughing all the way to the bank and then some.. It works..
As a "FREE" advertising tool, its fantastic, as is twitter..
If I hit post this reply, then delete this reply, whilst some wont see it, it has made its way to cyberspace and its still out there somewhere..
But then so is everything you do on your computer.. Most hit delete and think its gone, but it isnt its buried somewhere in the computer, someone with the tools can pull it all up.. Unless you have a program that erases it, it is still findable..
I myself have used facebook for along time, I used to put my layouts up when I first started using it.. Because I have always given credit, I included links to the kits ect..
This was before I even started doing CT work.. I see so many layouts placed up, and no links no credits at all...
Its one place that doesnt have the restrictions placed on it, so I have always used it..
Recently I have noticed lots of designers using it, and more and more cts now placing their layouts up as well, ( but often with no credits)
The privacy thing, I look at it this way, we nolonger have a choice on what of our information is stored and transmitted via cyberspace...
Everything these days is on computers ect, so our info is accessible regardless..
But facebook, does give you the options of allowing who to see what..
If you want to see what people can see when they hit your profile, try this...
Go to Account then chose privacy settings, then in very small print at the top, you will see View settings click this, then on the chose your privacy settings page click Preview profile... On the left side you will see an option to type someones name and view your profile as they would see it..
I use this often when I change settings..
If you respond to a message from someone not in your friends list, its gives them access to see your profile, no restrictions..
I also play the games, so I have groups set up in my friends list..
You can then decide on what permissions you allow those as well..
Your never going to stop the people that send you friend requests, or the games either..
Just hit ignore on friend requests you dont want, and also on the games you have the option in their to block it.. You will never recieve another message from anyone playing that game again..
On your wall, hover to the right and you will get a box that says hide..
click that and then you can hide either the person, the game or cancel it..
If you want to stay in touch with the person but dont want the game spam, then just hit hide the name of the game.. Again no more of that will hit your wall..
Its a "Free" marketing tool, and with all things free there is always something atttached, hence the annoying friend requests and game stuff..
If that wasnt there then it wouldnt be free..
Both tweeter and fb will only reach the amount of people that you have in your friend list..
So building those friends or followers on twitter & Facebook is how it works..
Fan pages need to be built up in order for them to succeed on their..
I use it often and have for sometime, the stats I have had of traffic I have directed to my blog, and from things I have posted on their sent to elsewhere to me has been good..
I have got some of the designers from here pages added, and I share the post through my profile when ever I see posts..
Granted at the moment my wall is full of game stuff, but I have created a second profile, that I now am using just for games, so that is about to stop...
Any designer here who would like me to share their things, please add me, and tell me what you are from the Den in the friend request and link me up to your fan page, and I will happily contribute to the advertising of both facebook and twitter..
I would also suggest that anyone who cts and places their layouts on facebook, to include links to the product, as the latest changes in the photo albums now makes them clickable links :)

Yeap I believe I have you Robyn, I know your in my friends list..
Fan pages are different to groups as well..
You want Fan page..
Karen told me The Den had a page, so I have added myself to that, and from there found a couple of the designers from here.. Who I have also added..
Another suggestion is on your fan page, add all your designers to the favorite pages.. I get alot that way, and add everyone to mine, that way anyone coming to the page can find any other designer they may want to check out as well..
So if you have all your designers fan pages in there, you are all linked so to speak..
And it makes it easier for people like me, who look through to find designers I havnt got, or havnt seen before..
I will be getting back full steam shortly so my wall is going to be a digi scrappers dream land again lol.. cheers1
