I have seen a trend in the galleries and thought it would be fun to give it a try.

So your challenge this month is to create "cutouts" in our layout. Cutouts are when you have two layers of paper and you cut a shape out of the top layer to show the bottom layer through.

Here is my LO using this technique. Have fun with this, be creative. I think I am even going to try another one with circles.

OK, I figured out how to cut using the marquee tools but don't know how to do the shadow when I have somethng (like a ribbon) weave in and out of the holes. If I use a shadow, you can really tell I did some erasing. Any tricks here I should know about?? :o)

When I am 'cutting' a ribbon and the shadow is off I typically duplicate the layer, shadow the bottom layer and then erase where that shadowing is off. There may be a better way, but that's easiest for me.

I don't remember much about PSE, but in CS4 I can change the angle of the shadows too. If you can, you might want to play with that too.

Here's my layout using the cutout technique. It's not as "cutout" as I'd like. I'll have to work on that:)

I really like them and have seen them in other layouts too. I like the depth they add.

Thank you from a beginner,

The cut-out techinique is pretty simple. You layer two papers. Then you cut a shape out of the top paper so that the bottom paper shows through. In order to get the depth you are looking for you need to work on the shadows. Hope this is helpful.

I love cutouts on layouts. For this challenge I cutout the bottom of the flourish border at the top of the layout to show the red underneath. I used Laura's (Maggie May Designs) kit, Caramel Apple for this layout.
