:confused:I have had my AOL email address for almost 25 years, so just HATE to change it. But I am really tired of the AOL wanna-be browser. I use Firefox whenever I can, and am finally ready to stop using the AOL software... I think... I have been looking at the Firefox browser software.. (not sure I am using the right words here) and I think I like it. I see a way to "bookmark" pages, but this feature, as I understand it, seems limiting to me. In AOL software, I have over 100 things "bookmarked" in my "Favorite Places" in folders, but I don't see that capability in Firefox. Does anyone have any experience with this - or are you able to guide me in any way?

Karen, I've got Firefox and IE.

I mainly use IE because I'm familiar with it. I find Firefox a bit 'clunky' and I don't see a bookmarking capability either. But having said that, I've never really looked at it too closely as all my favourite sites are bookmarked in IE. I only installed Firefox originally because some sites do 'funny things' in IE and those sites actually say 'our site is best viewed through Firefox. I've no idea why that should be.

I know Firefox has lots of gimmicky add-ons and most people that use it absolutely LOVE it.

I use Firefox and yes, there is a book mark facility. You can even open all the bookmarks in one folder at one time, which I think it is great. You can design and use your own "skin" and use it.

In the FAQ it says you can transfer all your old bookmarks etc.:
"Yes. To make the switch as seamless as possible, you can import your favorites (bookmarks), history, saved passwords and other settings during the installation process. Or, if you decide to take care of that later we have detailed instructions (http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Importing+Bookmarks+And+Other+Data+From+Internet+E xplorer) to walk you through the simple steps."

I like the Fox clocks - across the bottom I have 4 different time zones showing. It helps to keep track of the time in different parts oft he world.

We were posting at the same time Robyn. I'm one of those people who love it and use it all the time.

I have both.
I prefer IE, because I like it.
Although,
sometimes Firefox allows to to DL , when IE...says page not found. I am not happy at those moments. I prefer my DL via IE...but will do what I need to do.

That importing bookmarks is soooo handy to know. Thanks Karen.
Still think I'll stick to what I know though........IE.

Let us know if you need help ... there are obviously several of us Firefox lovers!

I have been using firefox for years, its loads faster, is so much safer and has a all these wonderful gadgets you can add on to make it even more useful..
I create folders inside bookmarks and drag my important ones onto the toolbar, so I can just click and away I go..
see what I mean.. :) Its all pretty and stuff lol.. And I dont have to go into the bookmarks folder for my most used bookmarks there on the bar.. There is as I said so many wonderful addons and plugins you can get as well..

Karen, You can install both browsers so you can try it out. I use a Mac and use both Safari and Firefox. That way, I have ALL the features I like! :) (You may like the FTP plug-in.)

Well, I am certain it is because I am not too smart sometimes (no comments on that phrase), but to me..it is slower-:o and more steps when I try to DL.
DH likes it though.

Hey ladies,

If you ever have a 'spare moment' LOL perhaps you could do a simple tut on Firefox for dummies like me!

I love the Firefox browser. The only time I use IE is for the monthly Windows security updates.

Like Maree, I create folders inside bookmarks and have important ones in the toolbar. I don't have very many addons but I do have Adblock Plus. The Adblock Plus works so well that it blocked me from seeing the Amazon link at the bottom of the former Den forum until I changed my setting in Adblock Plus.

Got room for a third....
I needed to DL today for some QC work. IE did not work, so had to go to firefox....I survived, however- the entire DL > save as > unzip > "hoop-d-do> and> tyler >too!...took me longer than it ever would have via IE.

gotta love techology.

I have XP, Bill has vista.

Thanks everyone! This is great information. I have been using the AOL software simply because I'm used to it, but when it acts up I will go directly to either IE or Firefox, which are both installed. If I can't get something to download thru AOL I can get it thru one of the others. But just think I'm ready to make the complete switch. Mozz, the thing about the folders inside the folders... and then dragging onto the tool bar... that's what I meant to say.......... oh, gezz.. now do I have to do a LO on this and enter it in my Quote Challenge????? I'm email you girl!

I got Firefox coz Karen advised me to for d/ls, LOL!!!
have to say though, I have far less trouble with d/ls now and they're much faster.
I'm not very techy and a bit scared of eating up too much memory on my old pooter, LOL, but this was easy to install, it gicves you the option of keeping all your old IE faves during the process, so even I couldn't miss it, LOL!!

I rarely use IE now. I know I haven't explouted FF to the max...eg. the clocks mentioned sounds really handy, so much find out about those so i can be at US scrap chats on time, LOL!!!

I shall expect to hear you've done it soon Karen, LOL!!!!

My response exactly mirrors Robyn's here, so I say "ditto." She uses it for exactly the same reasons I do!:)

Thanks for all the helpful hints on all the things you CAN do with Firefox--I may eventually convert all the way as I get so frustrated with IE at times!

I had FireFox for about 2 years when I first lived with DD. Then when I went back home I went back to IE. I added FireFox at Karen's suggestion and kinda use both now.

I changed over to Firefox about a year ago and I wouldn't go back to IE now. I've never had any problem with it and I use google mail which has also been great.

Thanks again! I do use Firefox for downloads, almost exclusively, because in comparison to AOL and IE, on my computer and with my ISP, it is noticeably much faster and I have fewer problems. Mozz explained to me how to accomplish what I want with Bookmarks, so over the next week or so, I'll be using FF to see how it goes for me. The problem I have is that alllllll of my information is bookmarked in AOL, not IE, so I will have to manually visit every "favorite" and bookmark it ... manually... in FF. That will be a big job!

Maree

actually nope,
Find a site that allows you to store your bookmarks online, then you save them upload them to there, then you just download them back to ff and they are all there how you have them ..

You should be able to go into your bookmarks on aol and go export them, save them onto your desktop and then import through firefox..

I have used Firefox ever since it was recommended to me by the Geeks To Go forum and I love it. The security is much better and there are lots of neat gadgets, although I haven't really gotten into them.

I use Firefox SOMETIMES.....
because I'm on Mac, Safari performs the best for me (like Robyn, I dont seem to get along with the book marking capabilities of Firefox, or the history tracking) but at times when some stuff wont download on Safari, Firefox does, faster and effciciently...

There are tons of people who worship Firefox....I just can't get used to total use of it ...

I have used Firefox for several years...and loved it to death. For anyone who is interested in a *short* history lesson....Firefox is what is known as "open source"...which means that the code is publicly available to developers. That is why there are so many neat gadgets and add ons for Firefox. Unlike IE, which is a closely guarded, copyrighted Microsoft secret! :D Crackers seldom go after Firefox because it has a smaller portion of the market share, so it is deemed more secure. In all the time I have been using it, I can honestly say that I have had no instances of cracking or hacking into it.

The downside? It doesn't play very well with Windows 7. WAH! So I'm back to using IE....with very, very mixed feelings! Most of them bad. I miss my Firefox!

Mozilla is the parent company of Firefox, and they also put out a very sweet email client...Thunderbird. It is also very secure and elegantly simple...and I have used it in the past with excellent results.

<sighing and shrugging my shoulders> I know, Karen....some do and some don't play well together. I'm thinking that part of my own problem springs from my security routine...between my hardware firewall and my software firewall AND WIN7....Firefox doesn't have a chance!

I didn't know that Firefox and WIN 7 are not compatible. I love Firefox with my Windows XP and I'm going to keep Windows XP as long as possible.

I think that the issue is NOT that Firefox and WIN7 have a compatibility problem.....it is much more likely that it is a problem with my own computer or router or firewall or security software, Grace. One program, when you think of it, has to be compatible with an almost infinite number of permutations of hardware and software. When you think of it, it is sort of amazing that anything works at all! :p

Update.....now that I have done a major rebuild on my HDD, I have reinstalled Firefox. SOME of the problems I was having are a thing of the past...and some persist. But it is much more workable, so I will continue to use Firefox for most of my browsing. I still think that it is far more secure than IE of any flavor......

I had Firefox when I had WinXP, and installed it again on Win7. I use IE as my main browser, but when I have used Firefox I have never had any problem. I stick mostly with IE because of all my favorites - and I am afraid if I try to transfer them, I will lose them. Is there some way I could COPY them to Firefox so I will have them in both places? That would make a transition to Firefox so much easier.

Since I have had Win7, I have had numerous incidents with IE; quite often I get the message "Internet Explorer has stopped working...." I just click it off and go about my business - it doesn't seem to interrupt what I am doing; it just doesn't do the latest operation I wanted to do. Then I get a flag on my Action Center saying I have numerous occasions where Microsoft did not have a chance to figure out the problem. So when I say "ok" to go figure it out, the computer takes a while to analyze all those incidents and it can't find the solution anyway!!!!
