Thanks Traci and Ricki. I learn something from both of you, particularly Ricki because Traci has helped me in the past and I had most of her suggested settings done.

Before I got my Mac, my opinion was that Windows XP is the best. Vista and 7 are for show. They take tons of memory but again, it also depends what KIND of computer is being used. When I had a pc I was quite satisfied with XP. It did the job the way it had to with no extra nonsense. But of course that is my opinion.
[my oh my, when I start computer talk I really get into it]
My first pc was an old cheap one that disguised itself as a computer but it was A computer and for me that was enough. It should of lasted two years and I was able to keep it "alive" close to 5 years. The number one rule is safety precautions AND cleaning and it would be my pleasure to help out on that!!!!!!

That is great Ricki. I believe Win7 takes a lot less memory than Vista. I volunteer down at the local Community Resource Centre and we have a total of 17 computers and have XP, Vista and Win7 on different computers. I hate Vista but find Win7 is a lot better - I use XP at home.

Well then I'll do my best to help as much as I can!!!!!!
And IF I don't know something, for sure I'll say it. I can only be of help in what I know and it's no shame to admit what I don't know. :)
So I will be looking forward on helping in these subjects!!!

I see you guys are well equipped. :)
I will try my best to help on cleaning issues and security issues. Like I said, if there is something i don't know, I will say it.
Do you clean your computer from time to time? And I don't mean the outside kind but the inside, like temporary files, caches, cookies and the like.
BTW, did you know that a keyboard is the number one place for bacteria?
So much can be said on the subject of computers............:D
Karen
08-09-2010, 06:31 AM
Yes I do clean the inside of my computer - I run CCleaner every week and that cleans the temporary files, caches cookies etc.
I thought the keyboard would be very high for bacteria but I'm not game enough to clean it much, other than a soft brush to get anything out from in between the keys.

When I was on pc, CC was MY cleaner so it's a very good program. And it is also a good idea to clean the browser temp/cookies and such. You may know what an accumulation all that surfing can do. I can go on and on but then the guide will be useless................;)
[uh oh, here I go again :D]
It is a good idea to disconnect the keyboard first and with a moist, not wet, towel to run over the keys. As time goes by you'll notice the keyboard buttons get black from the fingers and THAT is where the bacteria lurk!!! Also it is a very good idea to use a mouse pad. The scrolling also causes bacteria and naughty me, I never got the chance to get one so I'm always cleaning the table. :o
I am now working on TWO guides and since it just HAS to perfect, I hope in a few day I'll make a notice about it so I'll know where to post it.

Well lucky you!!!!!! But I think it's best to 'turn on the light' and I hope to do just that!
When I was new to computers I did exactly that, walked thru the dark and I can tell you I made mistakes but that's how I learned. Only after I would press a key would I realize "oh boy, wrong key"!!!!!:D
But you MUST be doing something right if all is still well so that should be of comfort to you. [hope I said that right]

I use a pen and tablet instead of a mouse and have never thought of cleaning either of them [hanging my head in shame]

There is a first to everything. Shall I remind you about ME? ;) Here?
I will include as many areas that I can think of useful on the first time.
Ah, the screens.......THAT is so important too!!!! And the first thing to remember before cleaning the OUTSIDE of a computer, [keyboards, screens], is to turn it off AND to take it out of the wall. You don't want to hear what happened to me when I thought I was SO smart the first time I cleaned my computer screen, WITHOUT unplugging it......:rofl2:!!!!!
Got the bzzzzzzzzzzzzz of my life!!!!!!:o

Oh Ricki, I get the picture. I always unplug my computer at the end of every day. I never leave the power connected to either computer; I heard so many stories of computers being fried because of a power surge of some kind (including lightning).
I have satellite internet and I even unplug that each night!!

So sorry for the delay :o things got a bit hectic by me :)
It seems the place a person live also is a factor to take into consideration. I aways just put my computer to "sleep" and that way I save the whole starting up process, but on the other hand when I DO turn it off, it comes up real quick. I NEVER have programs that start on login, that takes a lot of the memory, and that's why some people don't know why their computers "begin" after 5 minutes. It should take from 1 minute to the most 2 minutes, and that is a long time too. Also, something I do every few days, it's a good idea to shut down the computer for a few minutes, like 5 or 10 minutes. It helps the computer system to 'recover'. Usually that is done when one sees the computer starts to get slow, the slow kind that makes everything seem in slow motion. You say you turn it off so you're okay there.
It may be the area you live in is why you do that, to unplug. When I asked in our Electric Company how much does a computer that is plugged in ALL the time cost in one month, I was surprised to hear that it is very low but again, every place is different. And when it's in a "sleep" state, it's even less. Do you know there is a certain appliance for just those cases that the computer plugs into it, and the appliance is connected to the wall. This appliance is for situations when there is a power failure it stops the failure from going into the computer, thus keeping the computer safe. It delays the power failure from reaching the computer and causes the computer to shut down safely. Awesome technology.
There is no end to it.....;)

I just wrote a whole skaddole there so I can say it's a matter of preferences. If you too fear the computer getting "fried" that is a good idea but in general it really isn't necessary to unplug. 'shutdown' is fine too, ['sleep state' even better], but we all live in different places so each place has it's different electric way.
I am just finishing with the Facebook guide and can't wait to start on the Computer guide!!!! This is going to be FUN!!!:)

Your English is great Ricki. The main reason I unplug the computer and all peripherals is the risk of lightning strike.
I am eagerly awaiting your tutorials.

I'm glad I haven't lost my English 'touch'. The Facebook tut is just about finishing :D
You must live in an area that has that, lightning strikes. We don''t have that so it's not a problem for us. Like I said, it's all a matter of where one lives. If I'm not mistaken Power failures and lightning strikes have the same affect, don't they? I mean, in both cases the power just goes poof, doesn't it? If you live in an area like that, it could be a good idea to look into the appliance I wrote about.
I just googled and the abbreviation is called UPS for Uninterruptible power supply. You can find some info here on: Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uninterruptible_power_supply)
And it isn't an appliance as I wrote, it's an electrical apparatus. These can vary in size depending on the necessity. They can be small ones and they can be real big ones too.
I just LOVE talking computer talk smilie-love029

To a certain extent a power failure and a lighting strike are similar. But if you get a direct hit or a spike from the actual lightning it can fry EVERY electrical appliance in the house!! Because I use a lap top most of the time, I don't have a problem with a normal power failure because I have time to turn everything off safely.

Oh my, that can be awful!! So where on lives is a very important part on the security side.
When we do eventuality have harsh winter weather here in Israel, [which is quite rare], I do try to keep off as many appliances as I can. I always like to be on the safe side. As I like to say, better safe than sorry.
Karen

We have never had any problems with a lightning strike but I do know of people living in our town that have had every appliance fried!! This can happen any time there is a thunderstorm and not just in the winter.

I have been following this discussion with a great deal of interest! Ricki, it is so much fun to find someone else who speaks computer! :D Please check out this thread (http://digitaldesignden.com/forum/showthread.php?t=304) that I just posted about patching your computer. As a Mac user, Ricki, this won't affect you....but as most of us are PC users, I thought it prudent to post it.
I have a desktop running Win7, which I really like. It will become the XP of this decade, I think. Vista is a complete joke. I loved XP and most of the computers I service still run XP. You are right about it being a memory hog, though. Have you noticed that with each new OS, the memory usage goes up dramatically? I think it is a plot to sell bigger and better machines! :D
Ricki
08-11-2010, 06:49 PM
When it comes to computers, I tend to ramble off :D. So much to be said on the subject!! I went over to your patch thread. Wow, I forgot what it was to have a pc. It is such a good idea to post those things. When I had a pc, I was always telling my family/friends to got ready for a 'patch day'. I would always get that "what on earth are you talking about "look but they learned real quick ;).
I am going to do a research on Windows 7 and from what I have read, it's okay. I remember when it came out, I was still on XP Pro on a pc, it was quite wobbly but it must have settled down. Actually the truth is everything that comes out is like that in the beginning and that's why I always waited until it got more stable and especially SAFE.
I really liked your patch thread. Humorous too!!!! And you are so right about those clicks. Never to click what you don't know and at all times to press the little "x" instead of the "no" or "close". So important.
Microsoft OS and most of their programs are a huge memory hog. I was quite addicted to Office, went with me on every re-install or reformat, and it never failed to upset me with it's slow slow working. I tried it on my Mac but with a Mac, who needs that. I am quite content with the built-in programs that Apple has. The ONLY thing I miss about a pc is the tweaking. Sometimes my fingers twitch to tweak. I'm sure you must be familiar with Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx), since you talk my language ;).
See how I get when I start? :D

LOVE Power Toys! I had every version up through XP! I don't have a version for 7, as it seems to have all those bases covered. But I'm sure someone will think of something that needs to be a Power Toy! I, too, use CC and have done since the very first iteration of that wonderful program. I also use Ad Aware, which I think is excellent. Are you familiar with that one?

Yes, these power toys are integrated in Windows 7, [that was googled]. I especially loved Tweak UI on XP. :)
CC is the best cleaner and I do know there are more good ones around but that is the best one. I used to use Ad Aware for many years but one day I changed a preference on it, something went wrong and poof, lots of things just went wild. Preferences are extremely important and the best advice I can give is to stick to what comes with it. As is. I also found it to be an excellent program but then again, I had a tweak problem, always was changing things and I SURE learned my lesson!!!

Now I know..............better late then never but now I have a Mac and I am STILL ever so careful.
