View Full Version : What Happened When?

July 4th is, of course, the anniversary of American Independence. But we have members from all over the world at the Den and this is a great chance for us to learn a little something about our cyber sisters. This month's history challenge is going to be an easy one.....

Scrap a page detailing one historical event in your country's history that occurred in July between 1600 and 1900. The page should include some kind of photo, perhaps a monument or a representative photo, and journaling telling about the event. Any kit from any designer; though the bulk of the design elements should be from Den designers.

Post your layout in the Gallery (http://www.digitaldesignden.com/photopost/showgallery.php?cat=523). There will be a posting bonus to be given out at the end of the challenge, which will run through July 15.

Traci... I love this idea! I have learned soooo much from my digi friends around the world. I am amazed... we really ARE all the same... same concerns, same wants and wishes....I look forward to seeing the results here!

If any of you get stuck for an event....Google "historical events".....there are a bunch of wonderful hits on the very first page that should give you a place to start..... <hint, hint> :D

It is debatable that Captain Cook actually discovered Australia as we were taught in school, maybe rediscovered might be a better term, but it still says so in the history books.

Here's mine. Fascinating time in American History--July 1870
Tremendously interesting read is here (http://www.nps.gov/archive/jeff/LewisClark2/Circa1804/In1804/HeadlinesAaronBurrDuel.htm) about Aaron Burr
and about the duel here (http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.toptenz.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Alexander-Hamilton-vs-Aaron-Burr.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.toptenz.net/top-ten-famous-feuds-and-vendettas.php&usg=__4LFRbSSjjlU-O98WzkTZ4B16lgo=&h=362&w=500&sz=89&hl=en&start=9&itbs=1&tbnid=k7omMw2wzUZ0fM:&tbnh=94&tbnw=130&prev=/images%3Fq%3Daaron%2Bburr%2Bduel%26hl%3Den%26gbv%3 D2%26tbs%3Disch:1)
The journaling on my page (taken from the internet) reads:
July 11, 1804 - Former Secretary of the
Treasury Alexander Hamilton and
Vice President Aaron Burr dueled in
Weehawken, New Jersey. Burr mortally wounded Hamilton, who died on July 12, 1804.
Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr were two of the key figures in the early history of the United States, but their function as founding fathers is often overshadowed by their legendary rivalry, which ended with a deadly duel in 1804. The tensions began in 1791 when Burr, a Democratic-Republican, was elected to the New York senate in place of Hamilton’s friend Phillip Schuyler, a Federalist. Hamilton took the defeat as a personal attack and developed a staunch dislike for Burr, and for the next several years both men frequently campaigned against one another. The competition came to a head in 1804, after Hamilton actively fought against Burr’s campaign for governor of New York and helped to ensure that a rival politician named Morgan Lewis won instead.
How it Ended:
Burr took Hamilton’s actions as an affront to his honor, and demanded that he apologize. Hamilton refused, and after several confrontations through letters and intermediaries, Burr challenged him to a duel. Hamilton accepted, and along with two seconds, the men traveled to a rocky bluff in Weehawken, New Jersey on July 11, 1804. It is often argued that Hamilton was a reluctant participant in the duel, and that he purposely fired his shot into the air. Still, all that is known for sure is that Hamilton’s bullet struck a tree branch over Burr’s head, and that Burr’s shot hit Hamilton in the stomach. He was taken back to his home in New York, where he died the next day.

Priss, your LO is very classic, and it was interesting to read this story. Now, as an "adult" I am so mad that history, in high school, was soooooo boring to me! I wish I had paid more attention! The only thing that truly sticks out in my mind was reading about the Great Wall of China... I thought, WHY should anyone build a WALL around an entire city? Three years ago, we visited China and walked on that wall, and it was amazing.... but back to your page... thanks for finding and sharing that story!

Interesting day today..the 4th of July 2010. Spent most of the day in the ER.
Was told to go home and keep quit..not walk around are do too much. SO if that isn't an open permission to go to the Den I don't know what is..
Any way that gave me time to doa page..The first in oh so long.
Thanks Traci for the challenge. It has been great fun seeing the other layouts and working on this one. I am soooo rusty..

Well Traci, you really got me thinking with this challenge. I had several ideas but I could not find images for most of them . In the end I used one of my own photos and tizzied it up [grinning].

Anzac Day (http://www.digitaldesignden.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=136&title=anzac-day&cat=523) is when Australians and New Zealanders honour those that have served their country.

Well, as old as I am, :D I was not present in 1776, but... the Fife player in this historic 'spirit of 76 by Archibald Willard' is a relative on Mama's Daddy's side.

The Battle of Gettysburg took place from July 1 - 3, 1864. I don't have any photos of Gettysburg, even tho I've been there several times as a youngster (many years ago!). The images on my layout are common ones found on the internet. Hope that is OK.

Here's mine - the Signing of the Declaration of Independence. Tried to be more original and not "use" the July 4 event--but could not find too many other notable events in July (probably just wasn't lookin in the right place!).:D

Although maybe not quite a fit for this category, I was compelled to make this layout after seeing a wringer washing machine on a TV show. Reminded me of how long my mother stuck to the "old" (but probably better for the clothes) technology.
