I just bought a new HP PhotoSmart All-in-One printer, model C309a. I have a choice of hooking it up wireless or with USB. Does anyone know if one way works better than the other? I'll be connecting to a Dell laptop with Win7 64-bit OS. I don't want to install it until I get some feedback.

Also, when installing a new printer, does it automatically install the ICC Profile?

I love anything wireless!! I do have a wireless printer in the RV and love it.
Can't answer you other question however.

I use my laser Hp as a wireless printer for my laptop. the printer is in my office, my laptop is in the living room. Most times I love it but once in awhile it loses my connection. I think it has to do with our closest neighbor's wireless phones, lol! You just need to add a printer, choose a network wireless printer when asked. Most times, if the printer is on, your computer should be able to find the "web address". If it doesn't find the address you will have to enter it manually, so you will need to read the directions on how to obtain your specific web address for this printer. Hope this helps!

Yes, these comments help. My fear is that if our internet goes out, then I can't print. Sherrie, our router address if VERY long. It would really be a pain if I had to enter that manually if the connection is lost. I'm really going to have to think about this. I may just use the USB.

I'm assuming I can switch to wireless at some point if I decide to try it.

Lana! congrats on wireless.
I don't know about all the other printers, but with Epson, you need to go to their website and download the ICC profiles that you want.:)

Okay, thanks, Laura. I'm calling HP tomorrow and am making a list of questions BEFORE I install the software! I'll add ICC profile to my questions. Smile

Hey, LanaSue....I can't/won't tell you how to install it....all I can do is tell you how I do mine. I have my HP printers (both of them) hard wired to my desktop (since they are all on the same desk anyway). They are both USB. Then I have them both set up for wireless access through the network so anyone else can use them on the network. That way, I can use them with my laptop, and my kids and DGS can use them with theirs....but no one can use them at all unless I allow access to my network.

ICC profiles are NOT automatically downloaded. You must obtain those from the appropriate website. There are profiles for printers and also for branded papers. For instance, I use Red River papers almost exclusively. They provide ICC profiles for each of their papers. Epson provides profiles, as do Canon and HP.

Hope this all helps you!

Traci, thanks so much for this info. Is it BEST to download the ICC profile to use in PSE 8? In which file on my computer do I place the downloaded ICC profile?

Okay, I have my new printer set up. I called HP to ask a few questions before setting it up, and the tech offered to set up the whole thing for me, so I let him!! There are no HP ICC profiles for this particular printer. It's supposedly Adobe ready. And since I currently use HP photo paper, there's no problem there, either.

I was told that if I primarily use my laptop at my desk (which I do), it is best to use a USB connection. But any time I want to switch to wireless, or add my husband's computer wi-fi, I can do so easily through the printer settings and installing the software on his computer.

Now, to try out my new printer using PSE. Wish me luck!

And that is why I ALWAYS use HP! They have the best tech support in the world! :)

I printed a scrapbook page on my new printer. It printed beautifully. Very little clipping, but I do want to see if I can tweak it a bit so there's even less clipping.

Yes, it is the Aunt Sue LO for Sketch 0701! I need to create more pages for my trip to Missouri. Maybe I can get to that yet today! :p

I loved that page...and left a comment in the gallery. I hope you get a chance to do some more pages for your trip....isn't it fun to have a home again?

ICC Profiles? If you want to use other than HP paper and the results are important to you - go to the product's site and download their profiles. There is a major difference when your use the proper profiles. But, then again, HP has all the paper products you probably need.

I always match my paper and printer - just makes life easier.

Personal opinion? I wouldn't use wireless printing on anything other than draft and un-important things. If the printer pauses during a scrapbook layout or photo - the print is trashed and the ink and paper is wasted. That would bug me soooo much.

Thanks, Janice. I'll try to remember this if I use anything but HP papers.

And you're right about the wireless. I set up using USB.
